Key stylistic features of Contemporary Dance

 Contemporary dance is an expressive and emotion-led form of dance. It was pioneered by figures such as Ruth Saint Denis and Martha Graham and its aim was to break the rules at a time when only ballet was considered prestigious. The movements and routines relied on experimentation and self-expression rather than technique.  Positions of the feet: Rather than balletic pointed feet, contemporary dances use flexed feet (often barefoot), meaning the foot is bent at the ankle.  In this image, the person's feet are flexed rather than pointed, giving the leap a sense of freedom.  Teacher feedback: Rosy, you have worked very hard in all aspects of the Kathak dance style project and made clear progress in a style that is challenging and was new to you.  In your Performance on Wednesday 14 th   June 2023 you performed this ensemble dance piece with a strong mastery of the basic Kathak qualities we have been learning, applied to telling the story to a public audience. Though your commitment to developing skills in the Kathak style you were able to execute the hand eye coordination demanded of the mudras with clarity. Yu also developed the quality of extension and poise in your gestures and posture very successfully.   You consistently work in a highly collaborative way with your group and you take great care during the rehearsal of the piece to achieve strong accuracy in formations, and timing in relation to each other.
